OFF-SEASON TIPS – PART 1: New Season Starts Now

Off-season? Not really.

While the scoreboard might be taking a break, the real work starts now — in the garage, at the park, in those solo sessions where the small gains are made. Whether you’re gearing up for your first season or chasing another national title, one thing’s certain: preparation makes the difference.

At The Dugout, we reckon the best way to start the season strong is to make sure your gear’s ready to go. Here’s how to give your kit a proper tune-up before the first pitch is thrown.

1. Glove Love – Maintenance & Break-In

Your glove isn’t just equipment — it’s an extension of your hand. If it’s been sitting in your gear bag or gathering cobwebs in the garage, it’s probably thirsty.

Start with a quality leather conditioner. Massage it into the glove using your fingers, working it into the pocket and creases. This keeps the leather supple and game-ready.

Still stiff? Wrap a ball into the glove’s pocket and tie it up with a band or string overnight. Follow that up with a few sessions of catch, and your glove will start moulding to your hand again.

2. Bat Check – Find Your Sweet Spot

Not all bats age gracefully. Take a good look — check for cracks, dents, or weird rattling noises. These are red flags, and using a damaged bat could put your season (and safety) at risk.

If you’re ready for an upgrade, match the bat to your hitting style. Power hitters usually prefer a bit of weight and a balanced swing. Contact hitters often go for lighter models that offer more control and speed through the zone.

Choosing the right bat is personal — so if you’re unsure, have a yarn with us and we’ll help you find the right fit for your game.

3. Cleats – Traction is Everything

Softball and baseball are games of inches — and slipping at second base or getting caught flat-footed can cost you. Check your cleats for worn-out studs and thinning soles.

Next, try them on. Feet can change, especially for growing players, and even a half-size off can mean blisters or rolled ankles. Make sure there’s no pinching or sliding.

4. Catcher's Gear – Gear That Gives You Confidence

Behind the plate, your gear has to work as hard as you do. Whether you're catching for juniors or suiting up at premier level, a quick check now can save you later.

Leg Guards

Look for cracks in the outer shell and test the elastic straps — they should stretch but snap back securely. Make sure the hinges move freely and don't grind or catch.

Chest Protector

Padding should still feel cushioned, not compressed. Straps should hold firm, and the protector should fully cover from collarbone to waist.

If anything’s loose, cracked, or worn out — especially around high-impact zones — it’s time to sort it.

5. Helmets – Safety First, Always

A good helmet can be the difference between a close call and a serious knock. Inspect the outer shell for cracks or dents — even minor ones can compromise the structure.

Inside, check the padding: it should be firmly attached, not squashed or crumbling. Look over the faceguard and chin strap too. Everything should be solid and secure.

And don’t forget the fit. It should sit level on the head, covering the forehead, and stay in place when you move. If it wobbles, it won’t protect properly.

Keep an eye out for helmets with the NOCSAE certification — this guarantees they meet top safety standards.

The new season isn’t months away — it starts today, with how you prepare.

At The Dugout, we’re here to help you get back on the field with confidence, whether it’s your first glove or your fifth national campaign. So give your gear a once-over, replace what needs replacing, and sharpen what still works.
