In-store expertise
A fitting is never just a quick sale.
The right fit improves comfort, confidence, and performance. The wrong fit affects everything from how you field to how you swing. That's why we take the time to do it properly.
25 years of helping players get it right
The Dugout has been New Zealand's specialist softball and baseball retailer since 1999. Over that time we've fitted thousands of players - from first-season juniors to representative adults - and the approach has always been the same: measure properly, assess honestly, and recommend what's actually right for the player in front of us.
We don't have a scanner or a proprietary system. What we have is depth of experience with the sport, knowledge of the equipment, and a genuine interest in getting it right. You'll get straight advice from people who love sport and understand how to help any player - not a sales pitch.
What a fitting covers
Understanding the player
We start by understanding your level, how often you play, your position, and what's worked or not worked with gear in the past.
Accurate measurement
We measure what actually matters for the item — hand size for gloves, head circumference for helmets, height and strength for bats. We don't rely on age or shoe size.
On-body assessment
Where possible, we assess fit under real conditions — glove on hand, helmet on head, bat in hand. You don't leave until we're confident the fit is right.
Honest recommendation
We'll tell you what's worth investing in at your level and what isn't. We're not here to upsell — we're here to make sure you get the right gear for where you're at.
How it works
Our fitting process
Every fitting follows the same structure — regardless of age, level, or what you're buying.
Consultation
We start by understanding the player. What sport, what position, what level, how often you play, whether you're still growing, and what has or hasn't worked before. This context shapes everything that follows.
Accurate measurement
We measure what actually matters for the item you're buying — hand size for gloves, head circumference for helmets, height and weight for bats. Sizing is not just about length, and we don't treat it that way. We also account for hand shape, dominant hand, and position when selecting a glove model.
Product matching
We match the measurement to the right product for your level and budget. We understand performance tiers, model differences, and what the step-up in price actually delivers. We'll tell you clearly what's worth the investment at your stage of development — and what isn't yet.
On-body evaluation
Where possible, we assess fit under real conditions. Glove on hand and closed around a ball. Helmet on head checked for movement and pressure points. Bat gripped and swung to assess weight and length feel. You don't leave until the fit is right.
Ongoing support
Our role doesn't end at the counter. We're happy to answer questions about break-in, care, and when to reassess sizing as players develop. Growing players should have their gear checked regularly — we're always available to help with that.
No appointment needed
Walk in during store hours and we'll help you. If you'd prefer to call ahead — especially for a more detailed fitting or if you're coming in with multiple players — we're happy to set aside time.

The level may change. The standard stays the same.
Whether you're buying gear for a child's first season or a competitive adult looking to upgrade, the fitting process is the same — measure properly, assess honestly, recommend what's right. What changes is what we focus on.
First-season players
Focus: comfort, protection, and correct sizing
For new players, the priority is gear that fits correctly, protects properly, and doesn't get in the way of learning the game. We focus on fit above brand, and we'll steer you away from equipment that's too advanced for where you're at. The goal is a confident, comfortable start — nothing more, nothing less.
Junior & developing players
Focus: development-appropriate gear and growth awareness
Developing players need gear that suits where their game is at — not where it's going to be. A bat that's too advanced for the swing, or a glove that's sized up to last longer, can slow development rather than support it. We factor in growth stage and playing frequency when we make recommendations.
Competitive & representative players
Focus: precision, performance, and position-specific fit
At competitive level, small fit differences have measurable effects over a season. We take a more detailed approach — accounting for position-specific requirements, playing style, swing mechanics, and the performance tier that genuinely makes sense for your level of play. This is where the depth of our experience shows up most clearly.
Ongoing support
Our role doesn't end at the counter
Once you've got your gear, we're still here. We're happy to answer questions about break-in, maintenance, and when it might be time to reassess sizing. We'll tell you how to care for a new glove properly, what to look for as it breaks in, and when the fit has changed enough that it's worth coming back in.
For growing players, we recommend a gear check at the start of each season — not just when something breaks or stops fitting. A glove that worked well last year may already be limiting a player who has grown. Catching this early makes a real difference.
Glove break-in advice
A new glove needs to be broken in correctly to reach its potential. We'll show you the right approach for the model you've bought — not a generic method that may not suit the leather or construction.
When to reassess
We'll give you clear guidance on what to look for as gear ages or as a player develops. You won't be left guessing whether it's time to replace or upgrade.
Gear care
Properly maintained gear lasts significantly longer and performs better throughout its life. We'll walk you through what matters for each piece of equipment.
